Authentic W-2 Form
A legitimate W-2 issued by the IRS carries specific hallmarks. The paper itself, the typography, and the data fields all follow strict federal formatting rules.
- Official IRS red ink used for box labels and certain borders. This ink cannot be replicated on a standard color printer.
- Employer's Identification Number (EIN) appears in the top left corner with clear, consistent spacing and font sizing.
- Employee's Social Security Number (SSN) is either fully displayed on certain copies or truncated on employee copies with consistent formatting (XXX-XX-XXXX for the last 4 digits).
- Form code 'W-2' and tax year clearly printed in the upper right corner; the year matches the tax period the form covers.
- All 20 numbered and lettered boxes (Box 1 through Box 14, plus additional reporting fields) are pre-printed in exact positions with controlled spacing.
- Copy designations (Copy A for SSA, Copy B for employee, Copy C for employer records, Copy D for state) are marked in the lower left corner with crisp printing.
